SkyDrive has a brand new name. After losing a court battle in August with the British satellite broadcaster BSkyB over the name, Microsoft has today revealed that it will now be called OneDrive – with the company releasing a new promotional ad and registering the domain name onedrive.com.
“Why OneDrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff,” Ryan Gavin, Microsoft’s general manager for consumer apps and services, wrote in a blog post announcing the change.
“One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.”

Microsoft has called their cloud storage service “SkyDrive” since 2007 – back in its Windows Live days. However, BSkyB asserted its copyright on the name and took Microsoft to court – and won – in the European Union. Microsoft was about to appeal the decision, before a settlement with BSkyB allowed Microsoft to use the name for a “reasonable amount” of time so they can come up with a new name.
