Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 May 2026
Tech Geek (“we”, “us”, “our”) publishes technology news, reviews and how-to guides at techgeek.com.au. We respect your privacy and we keep the data we hold to the minimum we need to run the site. This page explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It is written to align with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
Who is responsible for your data
Tech Geek is the data controller for this website. If you have a question about your privacy or want to make a request about your personal information, please use our contact page — we read every message.
What we collect
Information you give us
When you leave a comment on an article, we collect the name, the website address (if any) and the comment text you submit, along with your IP address and browser user-agent string to help us catch spam. When you send us a message through our contact form, we collect the name and details you choose to include so we can reply.
Information collected automatically
Like almost every website, our server and our analytics tools record standard technical information when you visit: pages viewed, the date and time, your approximate location (country/state level), device and browser type, and the site that referred you. This data is aggregated and is used to understand what readers find useful — not to identify you personally.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. We use them to:
- remember your details if you leave a comment, so you do not have to re-type them;
- measure traffic and page performance through analytics;
- serve and cap advertising where ads are shown.
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Some site features (such as comment pre-fill) may not work if you do.
Analytics
We use privacy-respecting web analytics to see which articles are popular and where readers come from. Analytics data is processed in aggregate. We do not sell it and we do not use it to build advertising profiles of individual readers.
Advertising and affiliate links
Tech Geek may display advertising and may include affiliate links — links to products where we earn a small commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never change our editorial opinion; reviews and recommendations are made on merit. Advertising partners may set their own cookies; their use of data is governed by their own privacy policies.
Embedded content
Articles may include embedded content (for example YouTube videos or social media posts). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that other website, and those sites may collect data about you and use their own cookies and tracking.
How long we keep data
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically. Contact-form messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry. Analytics data is retained in aggregate.
How we protect your data
The site is served over HTTPS, kept up to date, and protected by server-level and application-level security measures. No method of transmission over the internet is ever completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to safeguard the limited data we hold.
Your rights
You can ask us to provide a copy of the personal data we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. To make a request, contact us through our contact page. If you have a comment on the site, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us, and you can ask us to erase it (this does not include data we must keep for administrative, legal or security purposes).
Children
Tech Geek is a general-audience technology publication and is not directed at children under 15. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top of the page always reflects the current version. Material changes will be noted on this page.
