Vodafone customers have just enjoyed a weekend of ‘truly unlimited’ data after an outage that affected customers nationwide for a few hours on Thursday. Vodafone’s Chief Technology Officer Benoit Hanssen said “We know our customers had a less than perfect network experience today and we want them to know we’re sorry. We want to make good by offering them unlimited data access all weekend.”

According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald, Between midnight and 3AM on Monday Morning, Vodafone customers consumed 590 terabytes of data which is double what Vodafone usually consume the weekend before. The customers in NSW were the biggest users with Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania following. “It was a record-breaking weekend for data usage,” Vodafone chief technology officer Benoit Hanssen to SMH.

Even though the network was under higher than normal stress, many reported to Whirlpool that their speeds were unaffected. So those with fears that Vodafone’s network wouldn’t cope were generally disproved by the offer. Many users on Whirlpool even reported that the speeds experienced on the Vodafone network exceeded their fixed-line ADSL2+ service. There was a minority of users who did complain about congestion however.
