ANALYSIS: Talking about the decline of any product would be as hard as talking about its success in the market. There cannot be any product in the market that is launched predicting its downfall. Every new launch is made after a thorough study, design, testing and other necessary routines.

However recent reports reveal that the end of the plasma displays is at its closer end. At the same instance, other reports simultaneously explain about its success in the market. Hence the future of Plasma Televisions is at times hard to be anticipated and a final conclusion about the fall of plasma displays cannot be drawn.

Positives of Plasma TV

The price of the Plasma Televisions are coming down and have become affordable gadgets in many homes. Plasma TVs have become the primary choice for those who prefer HDTV display. Plasma display units that were declared as the future televisions would not come to a close shortly. Because the plasma technology is being improved day by day and with the rapid advancements happening in the industry, it is quite evident that there lies a greater chance for the progress in the plasma display technologies.

Companies such as Samsung has reduced the plasma energy consumption by 40 per cent when compared to the 2007 models. Further other factors such as the thickness of the Plasma TV is becoming thinner and thinner and we can soon expect even more thinner models in the market. Several brand models with 25mm thickness will be out in the market by next year. Also frame-less panel televisions are expected to be released that will have no 50mm border around the picture. Principle tasks of several companies are upgradation of technology such as increasing the number of pixels, resolution and other factors to keep up the plasma industry.

Large screen Plasma Televisions are more affordable than the large screen LCD televisions. Samsung is still extending in giving the plasma models with improved technologies embedded in it. The world’s thinnest plasma display of size 2.5cms was launched by this company. Also internet television and wireless technologies were integrated in to the latest plasma models.

According to a study made in the mid last year, the growth rate of the LCD televisions have come down when compared to the PDP (Plasma Display Panel). The growth rate of the PDP is increasing because the consumers are showing keen interest in buying larger displays that are cheaper when compared to the LCD models. According to Tim Alessi, LG’s director for product development, said that they will include some of their latest technologies in plasma and for the next three to four years the sales for plasma will be more than 40 per cent for screen size of 50-inch and more.

According to John Revie, a senior Vice President at Samsung, said that the Plasma Televisions provided greater value and picture performance. He also said that the company will improve the product further and will continue to make investment in R&D and capital expenditure.

Negatives of Plasma TV

Energy consumption and carbon emission are considered to be the major factors that sets Plasma Television in the death row. These displays emit large amounts of heat to create a picture.

According to the market researchers there will be a decline in the manufacturing and sales figures of the Plasma Televisions as consumers find defect of the TV. Based on a study, there has been an increase in the sales in market share of the LCD while the unit sales of the Plasma Televisions slipped down.

Until the year 2003, Plasma Televisions have been leading the market with their 30inch screen size models. Towards the end of the year 2004, the situation changed completely. According to Gartner, lack of competitiveness and compatibility problems affected the growth of the plasma display unit.

  • the dropping prices of LCD flat panels
  • consumers view about the technology and marketing of the product
  • The investment that Matsushita (Panasonic) will make in the plasma when compared to the LCD displays in the coming years
  • The emergence of super-thin LCD TVs


It can thus be finally concluded that Plasma TVs are the best option for HDTV viewing and that more and more advanced technologies will be included to make it the best option among flat panel displays. Ultimately plasma display units must fight for its dominance and existence in the market with its LCD competitor.
