The South Korean government is trying to the cause of a malware attack that has “partially or entirely crippled” the networks of several broadcasters and banks in the country. While there have been no confirmation of who conducted the attack, initial reports are indicating that its northern neighbor, North Korea, is to blame.
According to Yonhap News Agency, at least three broadcasters (KBS, MBC and YTN) and two banks (Shinhan Bank and Noghyup) reported to the National Police Agency that their computers were halted around 2pm local time. Both AFP and Reuters are reporting that ISP LG Uplus has told the agency that they had a network crash.
Yonhap is also reporting that the President Park Geun-hye has been told about the issue and has told officials to take necessary measures. “We are now trying to determine the cause of the network paralysis,” a key presidential official told the news agency.
