Sony has revealed its new successor to the popular Xperia Z1 smartphone at Mobile World Congress today. The new flagship – the Xperia Z2 – combines the best of what Sony has to offer (according to Sony) and features a 5.2-inch full HD TRILUMINOS display and a 20.7-megapixel camera.

Internal specs include a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and a large 3200mAh battery. It will also support 4G LTE. Design-wise, it now has a slimmer body with the glass panes encased in a solid aluminium frame and smoother edges on the corners. However, like its predecessor, it is also dust-resistant and waterproof.

The Xperia Z2’s camera will include much of the same tech found on the Xperia Z1 – including the processing engine and sensor. The camera will also be able to record video in 4K resolution, and will feature stereo microphones to capture sound. Other camera enhancements will include Timeshift video, which lets you relive any moment in slow motion; background defocus; and augmented reality support.

Like all Sony smartphones, it is deeply integrated with all of its services – including WALKMAN and the Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation and the PlayMemories cloud storage service.

Sony Mobile Australia has confirmed that all three telcos – Telstra, Optus and Vodafone – will carry the Xperia X2. Pricing has not been revealed, but you can pre-register your interest through Vodafone and Telstra.
