Sony has today announced a brand new smartphone at CES that is based on the Xperia Z1. Called the Xperia Z1 Compact, the name pretty much describes what it is – the phone has the same hardware and features, but in a smaller package.
It has the same quad-core 2.2GHz processor, the same 20.7-megapixel rear camera, and even the same amount of RAM and storage (2GB and 16GB respectively). And yes, it also means that the phone is waterproof – so if you’re like a certain someone from a popular Australian Android blog that likes to shock people by spilling an entire glass of water on the phone, you can do it to this phone as well.
So, what’s the major difference? The screen size. The Xperia Z1 has a 5-inch display, whereas the the Z1 Compact has a 4.3-inch display. The Compact also comes in more colours – yellow and pink. That said, I wish they added a blue colour.
The phone launches globally next month. It’s coming to Australia in April and will be available on the Telstra network.
