Sony announces Playstation Move sold 4.1 million (to stores)

While both the Kinect and PlayStation Move try to outdo each other as the superior motion controller, the PlayStation Move has already sold more than the Kinect’s 2.5 million units, according to a press release by Sony.

Sony claims that the Move has sold over 4.1 million units worldwide since September – two months before the Kinect.

However, there might be a catch to that.

The number refers to how many Sony has managed to sell to stores and not how many it has sold to consumers – with a spokesperson confirming this to the Wall Street Journal. Because of this, the performance of the PlayStation Move cannot be determined as sales to stores, or “sell-in”, numbers are not accurate of its popularity.

The numbers do not include sales of the stand-alone components of the Move, such as the Eye camera or the controller itself.

The actual sales numbers have not been released by Sony. However, according to VentureBeat, the PlayStation Move may have sold less – and a lot less than what the numbers state. The NPD Group is reporting that fewer than 500,000 units have actually been sold, but these reports have only been disclosed to publishers and not to the media.
