Sony has today announced its brand new camera targeting the beginner photographer market, the Alpha A3000. However, despite its appearance, it is not a DSLR. In fact, the A3000 is a mirrorless interchangable-lens camera that just happens to be encased in a DSLR-style body.

The A3000 is designed to make it easier for consumers to take DSLR-like shots with a simple point-and-shoot function. As such, it features many DSLR-like features like a Multi-Interface Shoe (letting you basically attach an accessory, like a flash unit, on top of the camera) and electronic viewfinder – something you couldn’t do with a traditional mirrorless camera design.

Specs on the A3000 include a 20.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, 3-inch screen, and support for both SD and Memory Stick memory. It will still support the E-Mount lenses, so it makes it easier for people to transition between this and previous models.

The A3000 comes to Australia next month with a price tag of AU$499.
