After a lengthy delay, EA has confirmed that the Mac version for SimCity will be released on August 30 – and will be exclusively available through its Origin store. Users who have already purchased a digital or boxed copy of the PC version will be able to download a copy of the Mac version for free. Otherwise, they will be able to access both version from the Origin store.
The game was originally set for an April release date, before being pushed back to mid-June. It was then later pushed back to August because, according to senior producer Kip Katsarelis, “We have made this tough decision because we do not believe it is ready for primetime yet. We want to ensure the Mac is a great experience for our players and that is why we are taking more time.”
SimCity was launched March earlier this year with critical acclaim, but its servers suffered at launch as it was unable to meet demand. Many users were unable to connect to the servers, very problematic given the game requires an always-on internet connection. Most of the server problems have been rectified – thankfully – and the game managed to sell over 2 million copies.
