I am so not going to win any friends over at Samsung Australia, but the Galaxy Note 8.0 looks crap. The South Korean electronics maker has today announced this tablet, and confirmed that it will be out worldwide from the second quarter of the year. Looking at it, it just looks like an cheaply-made tablet with its thick white border around the screen.
The hardware specs, however, are alright. Like the name suggests, it has an 8-inch WXGA TFT screen, a 1.6GHz Quad-Core Exynos 4 processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera. It does run Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with Touch-Wiz, and supports both Wi-Fi and 3G HSPA+.
The Galaxy Note 8.0 does include a lot of things that can be found on other Galaxy Note devices – like the S Pen, and the applications included that let you scribble notes, eBook reader, and Smart Remote (it’s universal remote control app). There are also some new features: The Galaxy Note 8.0 will now be able to track the pen without it ever touching the screen thanks to Air View; and can use it to control the physical menu buttons on the device.
Based on that – it looks like it is competing with the Kindle Fire, the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini.
However, the weirdest thing for me is that you can make phone calls on the tablet (it may differ by country, however). Making calls on an 8-inch tablet – while a nice back-up – feels unnecessary given that you’re more likely to carry around your smartphone with your tablet. And yes, this one is a tablet, and not a phone.
