RODE Microphone launches iXY stereo microphone for iOS

Rode Microphones, one of the few Australian companies having a presence at CES, has announced a brand new stereo microphone designed for iOS devices called the iXY – allowing you to record high-quality audio on the fly.

Featuring two 1/2″ cardioid condenser microphones, the microphones are fixed in a 90 degree alignment; allowing for immersive, high quality stereo recordings when you need to record live music, meetings, lectures or even just doing basic reporting or dictation. It can also act as a microphone when recording video on a DSLR, instead of using the on-board mic.

However, if you are using the latest generation of iOS devices – you’re not going to be able to use them without an adapter, because it uses the 30-pin connector. There is no model with a Lighting connector – well, we hope there is one.

There is an app called the RODE Rec for iOS, which provides complete control of the audio levels of the iXY. This allows you to filter the audio to remove any low frequency rumblings, such as the air con and traffic noises; along with changing equalisation settings and sampling rates; and includes non-linear editing. There is also one-touch publishing to SoundCloud, Dropbox, email and iTunes. The app costs AU$5.99, while there is a free offering available.

It is available now from Rode’s store for US$199, and will ship worldwide in early 2013.
