We knew it was coming. RIM has announced a brand new phone, called the Torch, that hopes to compete with the other touchscreen offerings from Motorola, HTC and, of course, the iPhone. The phone will be running on the AT&T network in the US, with no word on Australian availability.
This isn’t the first time RIM has offered a touchscreen phone, it has had some success – though it was widely panned by reviewers because of the keyboard – with the BlackBerry Storm. However, the Torch does something different, it will have a physical keyboard – that will slide down – that looks exactly the same.
It has a 3.2-inch display with a 5-megapixel camera with flash. It also has 4GB onboard memory that is expandable by a microSD card, GPS and the usual affair – WiFi and Bluetooth. It does lack a fast processor – using a 624Mhz processor. The OS, however, is different – it is using the new BlackBerry 6 (in fact it is the first phone offering the new update),which has a focus more on social networking, along with a new Podcasts feature.
