Razer has today announced at CES that it will be bringing out an Android TV-powered device called the Forge TV – saying that it will bring not only Android gaming to the living room, but also hardcore PC gaming.
Specs include a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1 support. It also has a HDMI 1.4 port, Ethernet port, and a USB 3.0 port at the back. Because it is running Android TV, it supports the recently-announced Google Cast, allowing you to send content and apps to your television screen.
The Forge TV will be able to stream your PC game straight from your computer to the television. You will need to install the Razer Cortex: Stream application, which Razer says it can stream the game in full HD with a standard WI-Fi or Ethernet connection, and supports DirectX 9 games or above.
Sadly, you will have to wait as the beta version of the application comes out in the second quarter of this year. It will be free if you get the Forge TV or any of the accessories, or US$39.99 if you buy it separately from the Razer Store and use another Android TV device.
The Forge TV also comes with two accessories: the Serval and the Turret. The Serval is a Bluetooth console controller that will “elevate your Android gaming experience to a whole new level”. You can only connect four Serval controllers to one Forge TV unit. The Turret is a Bluetooth gaming mouse and keyboard designed to be used in the living room. While the Serval will come out the same time as the Forge TV for US$79.99, the Turret will launch in Q2 this year for US$129.99.
Razer says that the Forge TV will come out in the first quarter this year from its website. It will cost US$99.99 for a standalone unit, or $149.99 for a unit with the Serval Controller. Australian pricing has not been confirmed.
