Police arrest former NotW editor Rebekah Brooks over phone hacking

Rebekah Brooks, 43, the former CEO of News International – News Corporation’s subsidiary in the United Kingdom – has been reportedly been arrested by the police in response to phone hacking allegations under her former paper where she was editor, News of the World.

“At approximately 12.00 hrs a 43-year-old woman was arrested by appointment at a London police station by officers from Operation Weeting together with officers from Operation Elveden and is currently in custody,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

“She was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, contrary to Section1(1) Criminal Law Act 1977 and on suspicion of corruption allegations contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.”

“The Operation Weeting team is conducting the new investigation into phone hacking.”

“Operation Elveden is the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police. This investigation is being supervised by the IPCC.”

Brooks resigned as chief executive of News International last Friday amid more allegations coming out about phone hacking done by its newspapers, in addition with other illegal methods in gathering information for their newspapers – such as trying to impersonating another person and allegations of installing malware on their victims’ computers.

She has come out that she was unaware about the activities committed during her years as editor of her newspaper, such as hacking the voicemails of a murdered schoolgirl. In addition, she is scheduled to testify in front of a parliamentary committee.

According to MSNBC, ten people have already been arrested.
