OS X Mavericks available today

Apple have today announced the availability of OS X Mavericks – the new desktop operating system. With Apple touting over 200 new features, the upgrade will be available for free from the Mac App Store starting today. Mavericks has introduced new apps including iBooks and Maps plus an updated version of Apple’s web browser Safari. Apple have also said that Mavericks has new core technologies built in for “breakthrough power efficiency and performance.”

“Mavericks is an incredible release, which introduces significant new apps and features, while also improving the performance and battery life of your Mac,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We want every Mac user to experience the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security. We believe the best way to do this is to begin a new era of personal computing software where OS upgrades are free.”

You’ll be able to pick up the update today from the Mac App Store. If you’re running Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion, you’ll be able to upgrade directly to Mavericks. Be sure to check the Mavericks specs page to ensure your Mac is compatible.
