Nokia announces Nokia 808 PureView - 41MP lens on a Symbian smartphone

Nokia has certainly upped the smartphone camera race with the announcement of its new Nokia 808 PureView smartphone. It is unique mainly of two things – it features a 41-megapixel sensor (yes, you read that right, there is no dot between the 4 and 1); and will be Nokia’s first Symbian phone for the year.

Yes, you read that right as well. This phone will be running Symbian Belle. Though, whether Symbian has improved or not, we’ll have to wait and see when we get our hands on it.

And while it has a 41-megapixel sensor, you are not going to take photos of that resolution. You can take photos at 2/3, 5 and 8 megapixel resolutions – meaning that the image will be sharp and clear. You can also take photos up to 38 megapixel quality, where you can zoom, reframe, crop and resize images. Nokia is also touting the fact that its PureView technology will mean that it will also have superior low-light performance. The phone will also handle 1090p HD video recording with 4x lossless zoom.

No date has been set for its release, and Nokia is planning to use the PureView technology to all of its future phones – including those (apparently) on Windows Phone.
