Apple today announced at their media event, the new Lighter, Thinner iMac range.
The new iMac will come in both 21.5-inch and 27-inch display sizes and includes a new, fully laminated design to improve reflection issues and improve optical quality – so no Retina Displays. The new iMac has a 5mm edge making it 80% thinner than the previous generation and a 40% reduction in volume. Apple is boasting a 50% reduction in energy usage and each display is individual calibrated for optimal quality.
Additionally, the new iMac is available with Fusion Drive (as a configuration option). Fusion Drive combines both flash storage and traditional hard drive storage together to provide faster operation. Fusion Drive will automatically store the operating system and commonly used apps on the flash storage while keeping large files and documents on the hard drive. Fusion Drive will automatically move applications to and from flash storage depending on usage.
The new 21.5-inch iMac will be available in November for $1429.00 with 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics.
The new 27-inch iMac will be available in December for $1999.00 with 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics.
