Motorola RAZR HD, RAZR M announced - coming to Telstra in Q4

Early this morning also was an announcement by Motorola on its future phones lineup. As we know, Google is shaking up the brand to make it more profitable, and it appears Google is doubling down on the RAZR brand with three new smartphones – two of which, the RAZR M and the RAZR HD, will be coming to Telstra in Q4 this year.

The RAZR M features a 4.3-inch AMOLED Advanced display, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a VGA front-facing camera and an 8-megapxiel rear camera. The phone’s body is made with KEVLAR fibre and has a screen protected with Gorilla Glass – and whilst small, according to Motorola, apparently you will get 40 percent more screen than the “leading competitor” – the iPhone 4S.

The RAZR HD features a 4.7-inch AMOLED 720p HD display, a dual core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone also features a Gorilla Glass-protected screen and a body made from KEVLAR fibre; and claims that the phone is built for “all day action – on a single charge”.

The RAZR MAXX HD, the third phone that appears to be US only, features the same specs as the RAZR HD – 1.5GHz dual core processor, 4.7-inch display, 1GB of RAM and the same cameras. However, it features 32GB of storage and has a slightly different shape in comparison to the RAZR HD. As well, it claims to have up to 32 hours of performance on LTE.

All of these phones will run Ice Cream Sandwich at launch, but will be upgradable to the next version, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. All of these phones will launch in the United States on Verizon.

In addition, probably in part of its new owner, Motorola will offer all of these phones with an unlockable bootloader where the operators will allow it – however, it is unknown if Telstra will allow it in Australia. In the United States, it will let developers buy a special developer edition online of the RAZR M and RAZR HD, and will offer software to unlock the bootloader. And while that’s good, it does come with this warning: “…not for the faint at heart. Warranties will be voided”

Telstra has confirmed that the Motorola RAZR M and RAZR HD will be coming to Telstra’s 4G network. In a blog post on its Exchange blog: “he great news is that both models can run on Telstra’s network at 4G speeds making it faster to browse, stream and upload on the move when in Telstra 4G coverage areas.”
