Here’s what we are watching:
- Microsoft seemed to have overdone the whole boot optimisation, with Windows 8 ready to run in under seven seconds. Because of this, the window in which users can interrupt the boot sequence, is 200ms. That is too short for the majority of us, humans.
- Telstra have unveiled their first 4G Windows Phone, being the HTC Titan 4G. The phone, featuring a 4.7″ display, and powered by a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S2 chip, will have access to speeds up to 40Mbps wherever 4G is available. The Titan is the third 4G device to be sold in Aus (compatible with our infrastructure, *cough* iPad), trailing after the Samsung Galaxy SII 4G and the HTC Velocity, both of which run Android and from Telstra.
- The key ‘rickrolling’ video, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, was temporarily taken off YouTube yesterday. AVG Technologies, despite being a computer software company, has claimed copyright against the video. Ars are still unsure of how AVG managed to get the video blocked. Interesting.
- Finally, on the Google vs Oracle front, Oracle appear to be losing. The jury yesterday found that Google had not infringed on either of Oracle’s two Java related patents. Oracle, now, isn’t likely going to much more than some minor damages, for a ‘copied function’. Having said this, Oracle may get a chance to retry this case, though the likelihood of that is still unclear.
