MakerBot announces new 3D printer for ABS Filament

MakerBot has revealed its new desktop 3D printer called the MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D Printer. It’s a bit of a mouthful to actually say the name, but the desktop printer has been created for fans who want to continue to use ABS Filament, as opposed to the more environmentally-friendly PLA Filament.

For those who don’t understand what I just said – ABS and PLA are types of thermoplastics used in the 3D printing world. However, ABS does have some problems – despite being considered stronger than PLA – including that it takes too long and warps (which there are ways to mitigate) when printed on a cool layer.

MakerBot already has made a printer for PLA users – the MakerBot Replicator 2; but this one appears to be solely for those who want to use ABS. But even then, it has said that the 2X is more advanced than its recently-released Replicator 2. It features a redesigned heated build platform to suit ABS; and a reengineered extruder for easy reloading and low maintenance, reducing stripping, skipping and jamming. It has also improved on trying to ensure it does not warp, with its full-seal heat-trapping enclosure.

I should also stress that if you are looking for a 3D printer – this printer is not for you. The Replicator 2 is, not this one. This is for those who are want to play with ABS, and who are looking to push their knowledge of 3D printing further.

In other words, if you are a n00b, it’s not for you.

It will be shipping in mid-March with a price tag of US$2,799; and you can go to their website to order it from January 11.
