Kickstarter hacked, customer data stolen

Hackers have breached the popular croudfunding website, Kickstarter according to an email and blog post sent out today by CEO Yancey Strickler. According to the email, the breach was discovered on Wednesday night by law enforcement officials. Kickstarter then quickly resolved the security breach and “began strengthening security measures”.

No credit card data has been accessed, however, hackers were able to access usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. The actual passwords were not revealed but of course, it is possible for the offenders to decrypt weak or obvious passwords. Kickstarter recommends to create new passwords for Kickstarter accounts and any other websites that use the same password.

We’re incredibly sorry that this happened.

The company has apologised for the breach. Strickler said “We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come. We are working closely with law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again.”

Strickler has omitted details on how exactly hackers gained access to the data.
