HTC is joining the wearable devices market, joining its smartphone rivals Samsung and Sony (and maybe Apple, because fanboys are still waiting for the much-rumoured iWatch). The company’s chairman, Cher Wang, told Bloomberg that such a device will launch by this year’s holiday shopping season.
According to Wang, HTC has been working on a wearable device for years – to some degree of difficulty. “Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems,” she said.
Wang has not confirmed if the device will be a smartwatch – but it is most likely since both Samsung and Sony have their own smartwatch products that are tied to their devices (or all Android devices, in Sony’s case). HTC has previous experience in creating smartwatches as well – the Taiwanese maker revealed last year that it worked with Microsoft to produce a smartwatch years ago but was never released.
