Hitachi announces two new hard drives - uses them for their external HDD

Hitachi has announced two new hard drives before CES 2012 starts – the 1TB Travelstar 5K1000 and the 4TB Deskstar 7K4000. While they will sold to OEMs, Hitachi will also use them for its G-Technology branded external hard drives, meaning consumers will be able to use them.

The 5K1000 is a 2.5-inch drive and will be used in its G-DRIVE mobile and mobile USB external hard drives. These have been designed for use on a MacBook, and promises high performance with 6Gb/s SATA data transfer rate. It will be available in USB and Firewire, and are Time Machine ready, and will ship out sometime this quarter for US$199.99 for the G-DRIVE mobile and $179.99 for the G-DRIVE mobile USB.

The 7K4000, however, will be used in its G-RAID and G-DRIVE products. Shipping this quarter are the G-RAID 8GB model that is priced at US$899.99; and the G-DRIVE 4TB for US$499.99. The G-DRIVE will also come in 3TB, 2TB and 1TB varieties for $349.99, $249.99 and $199.99 respectively. Both have been described to be great for content creators – with the G-RAID promising simultaneous playback of multiple layers of HD video content on Final cut Pro.
