Garmin has confirmed yesterday that its HUD – or Head-Up Display – is coming to Australia. Designed to work with your smartphone’s mapping app, it will basically display turn-by-turn directions and project them onto the car windscreen, so you can keep your eyes on the road and not on your phone.

Setting up the HUD is very simple – all you need to do is place a transparent sticker on the windshield (or the included reflector lens) and attach the HUD on the dashboard directly underneath it. After that, just connect your phone via Bluetooth.

In order for this to work, however, you will need to have Garmin’s StreetPilot or NAVIGON apps. However, don’t fret Windows Phone users – there is a NAVIGON Mobile Navigator app for you, so you can pair your Lumia smartphone to the HUD. The app is also available for iOS and Android, but unless you are a Samsung phone holder, then this will be an expensive app purchase. The NAVIGON Mobile Navigator costs $69.95 on iOS, $49.95 on Android, and $62.49 on Windows Phone.

The HUD device itself will cost $179, and will be available from October in Harvey Norman and Samsung Experience stores in Sydney’s George Street and Melbourne’s Highpoint Shopping Centre. You can also order it online from Samsung’s website.
