Doctor Who fans will be able to use their Facebook Credits in order to rent a selection of nine stories (some of which can comprise several episodes) of the popular British sci-fi series on Facebook, a first for the BBC.
Instead of airing seasons of episodes, the BBC have decided to select specific stories. The episodes are: An Unearthly Child, Tomb of the Cybermen, The Time Warrior, City of Death, EarthShock, Attack of the Cybermen, End of the World and Silence In The Library/Forest of the Dead. In addition, the BBC will also be releasing The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (from the Seventh Doctor) as an exclusive for the Facebook Rentals service as it has not been released on DVD.
The episodes will be available for users in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and will be available to view for 48 hours after purchase. Of course, you will need to acquire Facebook Credits – and each story costs 15 Facebook Credits, or US$1.50 per episode.
According to NewMediaAge, the broadcaster – via its commercial arm BBC Worldwide – could also expand this to its other popular series Top Gear and its natural history shows.
Of course, this is a big move for the BBC – starting to offer its shows online for streaming rather than having the user download and purchase. And while I like this idea, I am also crossing our fingers for a BBC iPlayer for international users.
