Fairfax Digital launches IPTV service

Fairfax Media, the owner of The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times and WA Today, has decided to launch an IPTV service of their own to rival ABC iView, 7PLUS, NineMSN Fixplay, TEN and SBS.

The service hosts old episodes of The Gruen Transfer, Summer Heights High, The Librarians, Enough Rope and more. And I say old because they’re showing Season One of The Gruen Transfer, when the show is up to Season Three on ABC TV.

You can access the site via smh.tv, theage.tv, brisbanetimes.tv, and watoday.tv. But each version just a mirror and features the same content.

30 second advertisements play before you can watch the videos and video quality is relatively good. The selection of content is mainly from the ABC, but more should come, including “first-play” content.

It might have some potential, but at the moment the service just reeks of desperation from a company in charge of a dying medium.
