Distribute.IT, the company that suffered a major security breach last month, has claimed that David Cecil – also known by his alias “Evil” – as the person who compromised their systems that resulted in the loss of 4,000 websites on its servers.
“Australian Federal Police have arrested a 25 year old man from regional NSW who operated under the name “Evil” and was allegedly responsible for the successful hack into DistributeIT’s systems, which not only disrupted the business operations of thousands of SMEs but resulted in the loss of 4,000 websites from four servers deemed “unrecoverable” by previous DistributeIT management,” it said in a statement.
The company, however, is still working on trying to recover the data, and is also calling for “Evil” to apologise to the former clients of Distribute.IT – which has now been renamed TPP Wholesale by Netregistry.
Cecil, who has been arrested by the AFP over allegations of hacking another network, has been refused bail.
