The iPod touch is getting a revamp to bring it more inline with the iPhone 5 – with this new generation features a 4-inch Retina display, 5-megapixel camera and the same anodized aluminium being used to make the body.
Hardware-wise, the iPod touch will feature a dual-core A5 chip that feature double the processing power and seven times the graphics; and a 4-inch Retina display. Again, to make it more comfortable to use with the large screen, they’ve decided to make it taller as opposed to wider so you can use one thumb to tap, type and swipe like the previous generations. It also comes with its new Lightning connector, which replaces the 30-pin connector.
The iPod touch features a 5-megapxiel iSight camera with autofocus, HD video recording and image stablisation, face detection and LED flash. It is a tremendous improvement to the camera and makes this an affordable camera for those who want to take shots at any time (though, if you’re on a holiday, it’s probably better to get an actual camera). It also features the same lens material as the iPhone 5.
In terms of iOS 6, the iPod touch finally gets Siri – of course, that means you’ll have to be connected to Wi-Fi all the time in order to use it to access most functions – and AirPlay Mirroring, allowing you to watch a movie from your iPod to a TV that has an Apple TV connected.
It also comes with two new accessories – the Loop, which attaches the iPod touch to your wrist like how the cable for the Wii Remote; and new headphones called the EarPods, which have been redesigned to be fit comfortably and produce excellent sound. We won’t know until we try them, however.
The iPod touch fourth generation model gets a price reduction, of course, with the 16GB model being $219, and the 32GB model for $279. The fifth-generation iPod touch (this one) starts at $329 with 32GB and $439 for 64GB. They start shipping in October, with preorders starting September 14. Gallery below.
