Revealed at last year’s Microsoft E3 press conference, Sea of Thieves is the new action-adventure game from UK developers Rare. Calling it their most ambitious game yet, Sea of Thieves features co-op multiplayer gameplay and is set in a rich and open world, letting you explore islands, find treasure and sail the seas with your own crew.
At this year’s Xbox briefing we got to see some co-op multiplayer gameplay, featuring three crews and their adventures. We are shown the players’ genuine reactions as they are put into the world with no tutorials or set goals. Each crew begins to explore the area around them, having the freedom to do anything – you and your crew can work together to sail your boat, get drunk in a tavern and stumble all over the place, use cannons to attack other ships, and plug up leaks if your ship gets damaged. The main feature of this trailer is the ship-to-ship combat, and we get to see the crews react to discovering other crews – because it is a shared world, you will encounter other players in your game, and is up to you to team up with them and adventure together, or destroy their ship and grab their resources.
This gameplay video only gives us a small slice of what the final game will be. Aside from the ship combat, there will be islands to discover, treasure to find, creatures to battle, weapons to master and so much more. Most of the game is still a mystery, making us wonder how much more we can do in the final game – we’re very excited to see more info soon. Sea of Thieves, currently does not have a release date, but will be available on Xbox One and Windows 10, with Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-play.
